Chetumal

⏱ 5-minute read🔄 Updated 8 September 2026✍️ By Mexique Aventure

In short: Chetumal is the capital of Quintana Roo, right at the south, on the bay that forms the border with Belize. It is not a beach destination and nobody comes here for the sand. You come for its museum of Maya civilisation, for the manatees in the bay, and because it is the crossing point towards Belize and towards the southern Maya sites.

What to do in Chetumal

↑ Contents

The Museum of Maya Culture is the real reason to stop. It is one of the best-designed museums in south-eastern Mexico, laid out over three levels that mirror Maya cosmology: the underworld, the earthly world and the celestial world. If you are visiting several archaeological sites during your trip, an hour here before or after gives them a meaning the signage on site does not.

Chetumal bay is a protected area for the manatee, the large herbivorous marine mammal that has become rare in the Caribbean. The sanctuary is visited by boat from nearby, and sightings remain uncertain: the animal is discreet.

The bayfront boulevard and the town centre show you an ordinary Mexican city, without mass tourism, at local prices. It is restful after the coast.

The southern Maya sites

↑ Contents

The Chetumal region gives access to a group of archaeological sites far less visited than those in the north: Kohunlich and its monumental masks of the sun god, Dzibanché, Kinichná and Oxtankah. You sometimes meet more howler monkeys than visitors.

This is a region for travellers who have already seen Chichén Itzá and Tulum and want to go further, with time and preferably a vehicle.

Getting there

↑ Contents

Chetumal is about five hours by road from Cancún and four from Tulum, on federal highway 307. Bacalar is a little under an hour north, and the two combine naturally: you sleep in Bacalar and visit Chetumal during the day.

The city has an airport with domestic flights, and an ADO terminal well served from across the peninsula.

Crossing into Belize

↑ Contents

The border is twenty minutes from the centre. The crossing is common, particularly towards the Belizean cayes, but it involves Mexican exit formalities and an exit fee. If you have come in a rental car, check with the rental company without fail: almost every contract forbids crossing the border, and the insurance covers nothing beyond it.

Planning your stop

We do not run a regular tour departing from Chetumal, but we do build bespoke itineraries in southern Quintana Roo: little-visited Maya sites, the manatee sanctuary, combined with a stay in Bacalar. Write to us — this part of a trip is assembled to order.

Common questions

↑ Contents

Is Chetumal worth the detour?

For a first ten-day trip to Mexico, no. For a second stay, or for a longer trip heading down towards Bacalar and Belize, yes: the Maya museum and the southern sites amply justify the stop.

Can you swim in Chetumal?

The bay is not a swimming beach. For water, it is Bacalar an hour north, or the Caribbean coast further up.

Are you sure to see manatees?

No. It is a discreet animal and sightings depend on luck, time of day and season. No serious operator guarantees them.

Can you drive a rental car into Belize?

Almost never. Mexican rental contracts forbid crossing the border and the insurance stops applying. The crossing is done by bus, shuttle, or with an operator who handles the formalities.

How long should you stay?

A day is enough for the museum and the centre. Two to three days if you want to explore the southern Maya sites, sleeping in Bacalar rather than here.
