Bottom line: in Mexico, the question is never “is there a good restaurant nearby?” but “which one do I pick?” From Playa del Carmen to Bacalar, here are our tried-and-tested favorites, whether you want authentic Mexican food, an international menu, or a taste of home.

Traditional Mexican cuisine has been listed since 2010 on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. That’s not a minor detail: it’s the promise of a cuisine with centuries of history, hundreds of varieties of chili peppers and corn, and a regional diversity that the Yucatán Peninsula showcases beautifully.

We’ve lived in Playa del Carmen for years, and we’ve eaten at, tested, recommended, and sometimes booked nearly every address in this guide for our travelers. Here’s our honest, up-to-date selection.

Mexican cuisine, a UNESCO-recognized heritage

↑ Top

Before we get to our picks, a little context. Traditional Mexican cuisine was recognized by UNESCO for its community dimension, its ancestral techniques (corn nixtamalization, underground pib cooking in the Yucatán) and the incredible diversity of its ingredients.

In the Yucatán Peninsula, this richness takes on its own flavor: cochinita pibil, poc chuc, sopa de lima, and marquesitas for dessert on the street. You’re going to eat extremely well, and there’s plenty to satisfy homesick travelers too: Italian, Greek, Lebanese, American, Japanese and Argentinian cuisine all have excellent tables in Playa del Carmen.

Our tip: wherever you go in the peninsula, try a marquesita from a street stand. It’s one of the few desserts truly typical of this region — a crispy crepe filled with cheese and Nutella or cajeta caramel.

Our favorites in Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen has one of the densest dining scenes on the Riviera Maya. Here are the three addresses that keep coming up in our recommendations.

Ilios, the best value in town

Greek cuisine, service worthy of a fine-dining table, and an atmosphere that outshines the competition: Ilios is our benchmark on Quinta Avenida. Go for the mezze, the seafood, and a menu that’s a refreshing change from Mexican tables. It’s also one of the restaurants we book directly for our travelers, since it fills up fast in high season.

Bovino, for big meat-lovers’ tables

A Brazilian rodizio with seventeen cuts of meat carved tableside: Bovino is the go-to for grill lovers and groups wanting a generous meal. Excellent value for the quality and quantity served.

El Fogon, the best tacos in town

The El Fogon taquerias, found in several spots around Playa del Carmen, will take you straight to the real flavors of Mexico. Al pastor, cochinita, bistec: excellent value, and the address we recommend to anyone who wants a real street taco with no hygiene worries.

Ferron Jerk Chicken and Roots, a taste of Jamaica

Two excellent Jamaican tables round out our Playa picks. Ferron Jerk Chicken serves the best spicy chicken in town with authentic Jamaican cooking. Roots — not to be confused with the Holbox spot of the same name — has a not-to-be-missed atmosphere, especially on Friday nights.

La Cueva del Chango, for a Mexican breakfast

To start the day right, La Cueva del Chango serves the best chilaquiles in town, in a leafy, downtown setting.

La Casa 8, for a quiet table

Looking for calm? La Casa 8 offers a quiet table with a pool, away from the buzz of Quinta Avenida.

Other chains are worth a detour across the peninsula, starting with Porfirio’s, generally solid Mexican cuisine and attentive service, with several locations including a notable one in Mérida on Paseo de Montejo.

Halal and kosher food in Playa del Carmen

↑ Top

This is a question we hear often, and the answer is yes: it’s entirely possible to eat halal food around Playa del Carmen, and kosher options exist too. These addresses change regularly as local spots open and close, so rather than give you a list that could go stale within months, our travel coaches share the current selection based on where you’re staying and your travel dates. Just let us know while planning your trip.

Bacalar: lagoon views, burritos and street food

↑ Top

Two and a half hours’ drive from Playa del Carmen, Bacalar and its Lagoon of Seven Colors deserve a foodie stop of their own.

La Playita and Los Rápidos

Two spots with your feet right in the turquoise water of the lagoon, for a simple, tasty meal. You’ll go as much for the setting as for the food.

Mi Burrito Bacalar

You can’t pass through Bacalar without trying the best burritos in the entire region at Mi Burrito Bacalar. A generous street-food spot, perfect between two activities on the lagoon.

Pair it with: a day in Bacalar pairs nicely with the 3-hour boat tour of the lagoon and some downtime at Los Rápidos, the narrowest stretch of the lagoon. Our travel coaches can plan the whole day for you, from the transfer to lunch.

For a special dinner or a proposal

↑ Top

Some meals deserve a setting that matches the occasion: a wedding anniversary, a marriage proposal, or simply an evening you’ll remember.

Alux, a fine-dining dinner inside a cenote

Our top pick for big occasions. Alux serves Mexican and international cuisine right inside a natural cenote — a one-of-a-kind setting. Ideal for a marriage proposal or a celebration dinner. We book this table directly for you.

Le Lido, for a romantic beachfront dinner

A table right on the beach, romantic settings possible, a luxurious atmosphere: Le Lido is our other recommendation for an unforgettable dinner for two. Booking is also available through our team.

Peccato

Another address we recommend for big occasions and meals that go beyond the ordinary, with attentive service from start to finish.

Amaité, on Holbox

On Holbox island, Amaité is one of our favorites: every dish is excellent, in a well-known, well-located setting.

Naay, on Holbox, for a romantic beachfront dinner

Also on Holbox, Naay is the perfect setting for a romantic dinner with your feet in the sand, facing the sunset.

Nixtamal, in Bacalar

Bacalar also has a standout for big occasions: Nixtamal, where the service is exceptional, the food delicious, and the blend of flavors particularly well done. We book this table for you too.

Ceviche, burgers and pizza: the other must-tries

↑ Top

Playa del Carmen isn’t only a capital of Mexican cuisine: the town also gathers excellent addresses for every other craving.

Las Hijas de la Tostada, the best ceviche

Three locations across town serve ceviche, tostadas and seafood cocktails. The freshness of the ingredients and generous portions make it a safe bet, whatever your favorite tostada topping.

MU Burgerhouse, the best burger in Playa del Carmen

For heartier cravings, MU Burgerhouse holds the title for the best burger in town. A casual, family-friendly spot, perfect for a lunch break between sightseeing stops.

Roméo and La Trattoria del Centro, the best pizza

On the Italian side, two spots compete for the title of best pizza in Playa del Carmen: Roméo and La Trattoria del Centro, the latter featuring a live singer on Saturday nights for an even more lively atmosphere.

Beyond Playa: our picks city by city

Playa del Carmen and Bacalar are only part of the story. Here are our favorites in Cancún, Puerto Morelos, Tulum, Holbox and Valladolid.

Cancún

La Rosa Negra, a festive vibe with big shows and polished Mexican-international cuisine — a table we book directly for you. Puerto Santo, a great seafood restaurant near Puerto Juárez.

Puerto Morelos

Pelícanos, beachfront dining that’s been iconic for twenty years, and Osteria Barocca, a reliable pick for a varied, well-served Italian dinner.

Tulum

Burrito Amor for a simple, friendly meal on Avenida Tulum, El Camello for fresh, generous seafood, and for special occasions, Azulik and Bagatelle, two renowned addresses with striking views and top-tier service. We book both tables directly for you.

Holbox

Raíces, the island’s most authentic table for fresh fish, with a story dating back to 2002. Roots, for the best wood-fired pizza on the island, in a unique setting.

Valladolid

La Casona de Valladolid, the official restaurant of the Xcaret group, serves a selection of 75 regional dishes with impeccable service.

Practical tips for eating well in Mexico

↑ Top

  • Drink bottled or filtered water while your system adjusts. No need to worry about tap water for brushing your teeth, though — that’s perfectly fine.
  • Tipping is expected at restaurants, typically 10 to 15% of the bill.
  • Go for busy street-food stands: high customer turnover is often the best sign of freshness.
  • Book ahead during high season (December through April) for the most popular addresses.
  • Carry cash in pesos: some small street-food stands don’t take cards.

Mistakes to avoid

↑ Top

  • Not booking a table in high season. The most popular spots fill up several days ahead.
  • Sticking to hotel restaurants only. You’d miss out on a huge part of what the peninsula does best.
  • Forgetting to tip. It’s a core part of wait staff income in Mexico.
  • Ordering the spiciest option without asking first. Most restaurants are happy to adjust spice levels on request.
