Misión Boyado in Bacalar: How Volunteers Protect the Lagoon of Seven Colors
Misión Boyado in Bacalar: How Volunteers Protect the Lagoon of Seven Colors
The short version: Misión Boyado is a citizen alliance that protects the most fragile areas of Bacalar Lagoon. On October 2, 2026, 30 volunteers spent five hours renewing the marker line around the stromatolites in front of the Cocalitos balneario. We support this mission among the many others, and we collaborate only with partners who take part in them.

Bacalar Lagoon is drawing more and more travelers. Its beauty is delicate, and the people who live here know it better than anyone.
At Mexique Aventure, we stand for sustainable travel. That is why we want to shine a light on a local initiative worth knowing. Here is what it does, and how you can visit Bacalar while respecting it.
What is Misión Boyado?
Misión Boyado is a citizen alliance. It organizes group actions to protect Bacalar Lagoon and to coexist respectfully with its ecosystem.
Its members look after the most fragile areas first. They also promote harmony between residents, tour operators and visitors.
Actions happen very often. We chose to tell the story of one among many, the one from October 2, 2026. You can follow all the others on the Misión Boyado Instagram account.

Why Bacalar Lagoon needs protection
Bacalar Lagoon is nicknamed the Lagoon of Seven Colors. Its water shifts from pale turquoise to deep blue, and the lagoon stretches more than 25 miles.
It is home to stromatolites, living structures built by microorganisms. Some scientists prefer the broader term microbialites. These formations are among the oldest known forms of life.
They are also very vulnerable. Trampling, anchors, boats, sunscreen and pollution can all damage them. Growing visitor numbers add new pressure on the lagoon.
That is why residents and nature lovers decided to act without waiting. Their main tool is the boyado.
What exactly is a boyado?
A boyado is a marker line set up on the water. It uses posts driven into the lagoon floor, a rope and floating buoys. It outlines a fragile area and tells boats and swimmers to keep their distance.
The first boyado around the stromatolites, in front of the Cocalitos balneario, went up almost six years ago. Since then, sun, water, algae and limescale have taken their toll. A system like this needs regular upkeep.

The October 2, 2026 mission: renewing the Cocalitos boyado
That day, volunteers renovated the stromatolite area in front of the Cocalitos balneario. It badly needed the work after almost six years of service.
The job ran from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., nonstop. Thirty volunteers took part. Here are the steps.
| Step | What was done |
|---|---|
| Pull out the posts | Over time, the posts sink into the muddy sediment. Volunteers pulled them out of their spots. |
| Replant them higher | The posts were replanted so they stand well above the water, even when the level rises during the rainy season. |
| Remove the old gear | The rope and buoys were too damaged after six years of wear. They were taken out. |
| Clean the buoys | The buoys were detached, then scrubbed free of algae and limescale. |
| Install the new rope | A new rope went in. The cleaned buoys were reused. |
| Rally the crew | Five hours of nonstop work, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., with 30 volunteers. |
One detail stands out. The buoys were cleaned and reused instead of replaced. This simple choice cuts waste and sums up the spirit of the mission.

A lagoon with no protected status: where do things stand?
Many people are calling for the Lagoon of Seven Colors to be declared a protected area. They want a status similar to the Sian Ka’an reserve, also in Quintana Roo.
The road seems long. In the meantime, people who love nature and this enchanting lagoon act every day. Group work days, marker upkeep: every gesture counts.
This movement carries a reminder. Protecting Bacalar is not only a matter of laws. It also rests on the choices of each traveler.
No motorboats on Wednesdays
Here is a practical fact to know. There is no motorboat navigation on the lagoon on Wednesdays.
Good to know: if you want a boat outing in Bacalar, avoid planning it for a Wednesday. Pick another day of your stay instead.
On Wednesdays, favor kayaking, paddleboarding or open-water swimming to enjoy the lagoon. Sailboats without engines also operate. However, they cannot cover the full lagoon loop, from the Pirates Canal to Cenote Negro or Cenote Esmeralda.
This weekly pause lets the lagoon breathe. It is one of the rules that encourage more respectful coexistence.
Our local partners, committed for years
Mexique Aventure works only with local partners who care about protecting the lagoon. They have been an integral part of Misión Boyado for years.
This choice is central to how we see travel. We prefer people on the ground who know every corner of the lagoon and defend it. Booking activities on the lagoon with us directly contributes to its protection.

Visiting Bacalar responsibly: simple habits
A few habits are enough to cut your impact. These are the ones we share with every traveler.
- Do not step or sit on the stromatolites. They look like plain rocks, but they are alive.
- Skip sunscreen in the lagoon. Apply it an hour before getting in the water, and lean on a hat and UV-protective clothing. Find our tips in our sunscreen guide.
- Respect the markers. The ropes and buoys of the boyado mark areas not to cross.
- Pick a committed operator. Ask them: do they help protect the lagoon?
- Take your trash with you. Nothing should stay on the docks or in the water.
- Plan around Wednesdays if you want a motorboat outing.
Day tours exist from Playa del Carmen and Tulum. But the travel time in a single day reaches 7 hours from Playa del Carmen and 5 hours from Tulum. So we suggest experiencing your stay differently, by planning at least one night in Bacalar.
The goal is to leave the smallest possible footprint and to enjoy the place fully. In the morning, the sunrises face the lagoon. The setting feels worlds away, somewhere between jungle and lagoon.
