Getting around Mexico

Mexico, this vast, multi-faceted country, is full of treasures to discover, from heavenly beaches to fascinating archaeological sites. But to take full advantage of what Mexico has to offer, it’s essential to know the different means of transport.

With its vast territory and many attractions, Mexico offers a multitude of options for getting around safely and efficiently. In this article, you’ll find out more about the various means of transport available, and our advice on how to travel with complete peace of mind.

How to visit Mexico: bus, cabs, uber, transfers, planes or car rental?

A vast choice of transportation in Mexico is available to travelers, offering remarkable flexibility and convenience for exploring this magnificent country.

Whether you want to venture along scenic routes by bus, move quickly around bustling cities by cab or Uber, take advantage of a private transfer for optimum comfort, fly over the country’s vast expanses or get behind the wheel and explore at your own pace, you’ll always find an option to suit your needs and preferences. It’s important to note that the metro is only available in Mexico City, the capital.

1.  Car rental: for independent travel

Car rental is a very popular option in Mexico, offering total freedom to explore even the most remote destinations. It’s important to note that driving in Mexico can be different from what travelers are used to, with traffic rules sometimes lax and roads sometimes in poor condition (see more details at the end of the article).

Your foreign driver’s license is perfectly valid in Mexico. However, please note that most car rental companies only accept credit cards, not debit cards.

Make sure you take out comprehensive insurance for total peace of mind. Although rare, policy corruption is possible, so always carry a copy of your documents and keep little cash in your wallet.

We work with trusted partners to offer you the best car rental options, contact us for more information.

2. Take the ADO Bus for a smaller budget

Buses are a popular means of transport in Mexico, offering an extensive network covering virtually all tourist destinations. Bus companies such as ADO and ETN offer comfortable, reliable service.

They are also an economical option for budget-conscious travelers, with affordable fares and regular schedules.

The ADO company is one of the most popular, offering a vast network of routes covering the whole country. You can check their fares on their official website to plan your trip.

If you prefer to book your tickets online, it’s important to note that the ADO app cannot be downloaded from abroad. You can book your tickets via platforms such as Busbud or directly in Mexico, even at the last minute, as long as seats are still available.

3. Colectivos: local transport

Colectivos are a popular local transport option in Mexico, offering a convenient and affordable alternative for getting around within and between cities.
Although they can be less comfortable than other modes of transport, they are often preferred for their accessibility and flexibility, especially for locals and travelers on a budget.

Colectivos are minibuses or minivans, with the route indicated on the vehicle’s windscreen, making them easy to identify.
To stop, simply wave to the driver. When you board a colectivo, you usually pay for your journey on the way up or just before arriving at your destination. Fares are generally affordable, often cheaper than ADO buses.

This means of transport requires a little more knowledge of the cities, and in particular of the local stations to access them. There is no online map. You’ll have to ask the locals for directions, or your Travel Coach if the trip is organized by a professional like Mexique Aventure.

4. Private transfers: for comfortable, hassle-free travel

When traveling in Mexico, especially from airports to your place of stay or other destinations, private transfers offer a convenient and comfortable option for getting around.

You can avoid the hassle of driving or navigating in a foreign country, leaving the experienced driver to take care of everything.

You have complete freedom of itinerary. You can decide where you want to go and when, without having to worry about prices, public transport schedules or the constraints of guided tours.

When you book a private transfer with Mexique Aventure, you benefit from a personalized service tailored to your specific needs. Whether you’re traveling with your family, a group or on business, you can count on attentive, professional service. Contact our Travel Coach for more information.

5. Taxis in Mexico

Cabs in Mexico can be relatively expensive, especially from airports where prices can vary considerably. It’s not uncommon for cab drivers to try to inflate prices, especially if you don’t speak Spanish or if you look like a tourist.

To avoid excessive fares, here are a few tips from Mexique Aventure: rather than waiting in cab ranks where prices can be multiplied by five, it’s better to hail a cab on the street. You can often negotiate the fare before you get in. Make sure you agree on the price before you start your journey.

6. Uber in Mexico

Uber is also present in Mexico, although availability may vary by region. It’s best to order an Uber vehicle outside airports or hotels in the Riviera Maya region.
In some areas, especially near airports, Uber may encounter some tension due to the cab monopoly. Always check that the driver has a federal license plate.

Uber is generally available in major cities such as Mexico City (CDMX), Puebla, Guadalajara and Monterrey. However, note that there is no Uber service in the Yucatan Peninsula at airport and hotel level (quite rare outside).

7. Internal flights: fly to other cities in Mexico

For long-distance travel or to get from one region to another quickly, air transport is often the preferred choice for travelers.

Mexico has a well-developed air network, linking major cities and tourist destinations. Major Mexican airlines such as Aeromexico, Volaris, Interjet and Viva Aerobus offer regular domestic flights at affordable fares, making them a practical option for travel throughout the country.

For example, a round trip from Cancun to Mexico City can cost around 500 pesos, or around 25 euros. Domestic flights are just as secure as those operated by European and international airlines.

8. Trains: for a unique journey

Although Mexico’s rail network isn’t as well-developed as in some other countries, it does offer some interesting options for travelers looking for a unique travel experience. Here are just a few of the rail options available in Mexico:

  • Le Chepe: Iconic train linking Chihuahua to Los Mochis, offering stunning views of the Sierra Tarahumara.
  • Tequila Express: Sightseeing trip from Guadalajara to Tequila, including tequila tastings and cultural events.
  • Maya Train: Transport infrastructure linking the key destinations of Quintana Roo and the Riviera Maya, inaugurated at the end of 2023.

How to get around Mexico in Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum and the Riviera Maya region?

When you land at Cancun airport in Mexico, you’re faced with a variety of choices for getting to your destination. Among the options available, you can opt for the ADO bus, local buses called colectivos, cabs, private transfers or even car rental. Other means of transport such as ferries and bicycles are available in some Riviera Maya towns.

It’s important to note that there is no metro in this part of Mexico, and the Uber app is not functional at the airport.

The Quintana Roo region offers a multitude of destinations to discover, including Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Cancun, Bacalar, Holbox, Chetumal and many more. Each location has its own unique charm and attractions, from white sand beaches to historic Mayan ruins.

Important note: when staying in Mexico, many tours offer transfers to and from your place of residence or nearby.

1. Rent a car and set off on an adventure

2. ADO Buses: budget travel in the Quintana Roo region

ADO buses are a comfortable and economical way to travel in Mexico. They offer regular departures every 30 minutes and serve several popular destinations such as Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Merida and Bacalar. You can buy your ticket at the station or online at ADO website or Busbud.

At Cancun airport, you can pay in cash at Terminal 2 and by credit card at Terminal 4. Fares vary according to distance and are generally affordable. More details below:

  • Cancun airport to Cancun Centre: 105 pesos (approx. $5), time 35 minutes and times vary from 8am to 11:50pm.
  • Cancun to Playa del Carmen airport: 225 pesos (approx. $10), time 1h10 and schedules vary from 8am to 10:30pm.
  • Cancun to Tulum airport: 340 pesos (approx. $16), time 2h10 and schedules vary from 10:30am to 8:30pm.

For less frequent trips, such as to Bacalar or Holbox/Chiquila, we recommend booking in advance to avoid any unpleasant surprises in terms of availability.

3. Cabs in this part of Mexico

When you arrive at Cancun airport in Mexico, it’s essential to remain vigilant, especially after a long journey and in new surroundings. Cab drivers can sometimes take advantage of travelers’ fatigue and disorientation to charge excessive rates. Normally, cab fares at Cancun airport can vary from 600 to 1,500 pesos ($30 to $70).

Be careful, too, if you wish to pay for a cab at the airport by credit card, as the sign for the Mexican peso is almost the same as that for the US dollar. Make sure you pay in pesos, not dollars. Unfortunately, some tourists have been duped on arrival, and being charged 1000 pesos (around $50) is not the same as being charged 1000 usd dollars.

To catch a cab on the street, the best approach is to raise your hand as soon as you spot one moving. Once the cab stops, it’s a good idea to negotiate the fare before getting in. It’s important to note that cabs parked in specific areas or at stations can be more expensive.

4. Private transfers: for a relaxed arrival

After long hours on the road, you’ve finally arrived! But rather than worrying about your luggage and navigating a foreign country after a long flight, why not opt for a private transfer? With this option, you can drive straight to your hotel without any stress or hassle.

Cancun airport transfers offer a convenient solution for reaching your final destination, be it your hotel, a nearby town or a tourist attraction.

To give you a clearer idea of costs, which vary according to number and destination, here are some estimates for various popular destinations:

  • Airport – Cancun center or hotel zone = 800 pesos (approx. $40)
  • Airport – Puerto Morelos = 1000 pesos (approx. $50)
  • Airport – Playa del Carmen = 1300 pesos (approx. $70)
  • Airport – Puerto Aventuras = 1500 pesos (approx. $80)
  • Airport – Akumal = 1700 pesos (approx. $90)
  • Airport – Tulum center = 2000 pesos (approx. $100)
  • Airport – Tulum hotel zone = 2200 pesos (approx. $120)
  • Airport – Bacalar = 4000 pesos (approx. $200)
  • Airport – Chiquila = 2000 pesos (approx. $100)

It’s also possible to opt for group transfers to reduce costs, especially if you’re traveling in a group. For more information, contact our Travel Coach to organize your individual or group transfer and take advantage of this service to organize your vacation and excursions!

5. Local buses: colectivos

If you want to discover Mexico and the Riviera Maya at your own pace, car rental is a particularly attractive option. You’ll be able to move around freely, explore places off the beaten track and enjoy authentic experiences while being in control of your itinerary. Your foreign driving license is perfectly valid in Mexico.

6. Discover Mexico’s islands by ferry

You can also explore other Mexican gems, such as the magnificent islands of Holbox, Cozumel and Isla Mujeres. These destinations offer unique and unforgettable experiences, from white-sand beaches to crystal-clear waters and spectacular marine life.

To reach these paradise islands, regular ferries are available from various ports:

  • Holbox: no need to book in advance, just go directly to the port of Chiquila. Price: 500 pesos return (approx. $27)
  • Cozumel: you can choose between 2 ferry companies departing from Playa del Carmen, Ultramar and Winjet. Prices vary according to season.
  • Isla Mujeres: ferries depart from Cancun, Puerto Juárez the most recommended, Playa Tortugas and Playa Caracol. The cost is 450/475 pesos (approx. $25).

Once you’re here, there are plenty of options for excursions and activities. You can explore the unspoilt nature of Holbox, dive or snorkel the colorful coral reefs of Cozumel or explore the historic sites and idyllic beaches of Isla Mujeres.

7. Other means of transport, bike, scooter, quad or scooter rental?

If you prefer to explore towns like Playa del Carmen or Tulum by bike, bike rental is a practical option. Some resorts offer in-house rentals, and there are also bike stations such as Bici Playa in Playa del Carmen.

In Tulum, you can opt to rent a scooter, electric scooter or go on an adventure on a quad bike. The center was quite far from the archaeological and hotel zones, or even from some of the cenotes.

Whichever means of transport you choose, bike, scooter, scooter or quad rental gives you the freedom to explore the city at your own pace, allowing you to discover all its hidden treasures and natural wonders.

How do you drive in Mexico?

If you’re renting a car, it’s important to know how Mexicans drive and the rules of the road. Driving in Mexico requires a certain adaptation to local driving habits.

By respecting the rules of the road, staying alert and being patient, you’ll be able to make the most of your trip while ensuring your safety on Mexican roads.

Here’s some advice from Mexique Aventure and our Travel Coach before venturing out and hitting the road in Mexico:

  • Drive carefully. Mexican drivers often have a more aggressive approach to driving, which may surprise travelers.
  • Respect the speed limit. On highways, the speed limit is generally 100 km/h, while in urban areas it is often limited to 40 km/h.
  • Respect traffic lights. Traffic lights are used just as they are everywhere else in the world, although they are located on the opposite side of the intersection as in the USA. Make sure you stop before entering the intersection to avoid blocking traffic.
  • Some roads, particularly in rural or less-developed areas, may be in poor condition. Be careful and reduce your speed if necessary to avoid potholes or unexpected obstacles.
  • Beware of speed bumps, which are sometimes higher than the European norms and are not, or hardly, announced in advance. Slow down when entering towns and villages, as there are plenty of speed bumps to slow motorists down. This is particularly true on the outskirts of Tulum, Chiquila, Bacalar etc.
  • As in most countries, drunk driving is strictly forbidden in Mexico. Police checks are frequent, especially during vacation periods and festivals.
  • In urban areas and at tourist attractions, you’ll often find paid public parking lots. Street parking is permitted. If you’re staying in a hotel, find out what parking options are available. In the center of Playa del Carmen, don’t forget to pay the parking meter if you don’t want to find your vehicle’s wheel locked, and to pay a larger sum to regain the freedom of your wheels.

With all these transportation options available, you can easily explore all the wonders Mexico has to offer. Whether you prefer to travel by bus, plane, car or cab, there’s something for every taste and budget.

By planning your trips in advance and choosing the mode of transportation that best suits your needs with Mexique Aventure, you can fully enjoy all that Mexico has to offer without worries and concerns.

Mexique Aventure is here to help you organize a trip that’s just right for you and your budget. Don’t wait any longer and contact us. We’ll be the perfect travel companions for your Mexican adventure.

*A little anecdote: One of my customers recently almost fell for a scam at the airport. When he got lost, he almost took a cab that asked him for 1,000 pesos by credit card, but he wanted to pay in cash. It turns out that the 1000 pesos (around €55) were actually 1000 usd (around €950) with the credit card terminal used on site.

Unfortunately, this is a common practice at airports, and many people are fooled by the fact that the sign for the Mexican peso is the same as that for the US dollar.

Thanks to a few precautions and a prior reservation, he was able to avoid trouble and enjoy his stay without a hitch. Be vigilant and plan ahead, and you’ll avoid the pitfalls that can arise when traveling in Mexico.
