Isla Contoy

⏱ 6-minute read🔄 Updated 8 September 2026✍️ By Mexique Aventure

In short: Isla Contoy is a national park that admits only 200 visitors a day, and only with an authorised operator. No hotel, no restaurant, no shop. An island eight kilometres long, more than 150 bird species, four species of sea turtle. It is the most protected day trip in the region, and the one we recommend to anyone who finds Isla Mujeres too busy.

Why Contoy is different

↑ Contents

Contoy lies about thirty kilometres north of Isla Mujeres, where Caribbean water meets the Gulf of Mexico. That position makes it a rare biological crossroads, and the island has been a national park since 1998.

Visitor numbers are capped at 200 a day. That is very few, and it changes everything: where Isla Mujeres receives thousands of people, Contoy stays an empty beach, a silent mangrove and birds that do not fly off as you approach.

You cannot go on your own. There is no public ferry: access runs exclusively through operators holding a park permit, and those permits are limited.

What the day looks like

↑ Contents

The trip lasts around seven hours and follows more or less the same shape every time. A morning departure by boat, with a first stop for snorkelling on the Ixlaché reef, at the northern tip of the Mesoamerican reef system. It is shallow, calm and accessible to everyone.

You reach the island late morning. There is a white sand beach, an observation trail, a viewing tower and a small interpretation centre. Lunch is prepared on board or on the island, often grilled fish, and the afternoon passes between swimming, walking and watching.

Frigatebirds, pelicans and cormorants nest in their thousands. Depending on the season you also come across turtles that have come ashore to lay, and rays in the shallows.

National park rules

↑ Contents

  • A park fee of around 15 US dollars per person is paid in cash on arrival at the island. It is almost never included in the advertised tour price: bring the cash.
  • Marked areas only. The dunes and nesting zones are off limits, and the trails are laid out.
  • Leave nothing behind. There are no bins on the island: what you bring in, you take out.
  • Mineral sunscreen, or better, a long-sleeved rash guard. Chemical filters are banned on the reef.

What surprises people most: the complete absence of commerce. No beach bar, no souvenir shop, no reliable phone signal. Plenty of travellers tell us that is exactly what made the day memorable.

When to go

↑ Contents

The trip runs all year, but the sea decides. From November to April the water is clearer and the crossing more comfortable. The nortes, those northerly winter winds, occasionally cause last-minute cancellations: this is open-water navigation, and no serious operator sails in bad seas.

From June to September the trip is often combined with swimming alongside whale sharks, which happens in the same waters. That is the best window for turning one day into two memories.

Contoy is barely affected by sargassum, its northern position sheltering it from the current that reaches the Riviera Maya.

Common questions

↑ Contents

Can you stay overnight on Isla Contoy?

No. The island has no tourist accommodation and the park closes to visitors at the end of the day. Only park rangers and researchers remain.

Contoy or Isla Mujeres?

Isla Mujeres for the beach, the village, the restaurants and easy access. Contoy for untouched nature and the absence of crowds. If you only do one island from Cancún and you are travelling with young children, take Isla Mujeres. If you want a day that stands apart, take Contoy.

Do you need to be able to swim?

For the reef snorkelling you need to be comfortable in the water. A buoyancy vest is provided and the depth stays low. The time on the island asks nothing in particular.

Are there many mosquitoes?

The mangrove attracts them, especially late in the day and in the wet season. Bring repellent: there is none for sale on the island, because there is nothing for sale on the island.

Is the trip cancelled in bad weather?

It can be, and that is good news: it means the operator is not taking risks in open water. Plan a fallback date in your itinerary if Contoy matters a lot to you.
