Holbox

⏱ 8-minute read🔄 Updated 8 September 2026✍️ By Mexique Aventure

In short: Holbox is a car-free sand island at the far north of the Yucatán, where you get around by golf cart and watch the sunset with your feet in the water. You come here to slow down, not to tick off sights. Allow three hours by road from Cancún then a 25-minute ferry, and at least one night on the island: the day return is a mistake we see far too often.

What to do on Holbox

↑ Contents

Holbox sits inside a nature reserve, the Yum Balam reserve. The island is some forty kilometres long but everything is concentrated in three: the village, its sand streets and its north beach.

The beach and the sandbanks. The water is shallow for hundreds of metres — you can wade waist-deep a long way from shore. Punta Cocos, west of the village, is where people go for the sunset, and it is also where bioluminescence is sometimes visible, the plankton that lights up at the slightest movement in the water. The phenomenon depends on season, moon and luck: nobody can guarantee it, and be wary of anyone who promises it.

The lagoon and the birds. The three-island boat tour takes you to Isla Pájaros and its bird colonies, a freshwater cenote and Isla Pasión. Flamingos are around part of the year, again with no guarantee.

The village. Sand streets, painted façades, murals, a main square and very good places to eat. This is an island to be taken slowly, on foot or by bike, without a programme.

When to go: the whale shark question

↑ Contents

This is the point that decides a lot of trips. Whale shark season runs June to September, peaking in July and August. These harmless giants come to feed on plankton off Holbox and Isla Mujeres, and swimming with them is supervised, regulated and capped. Outside that window, the trip simply does not exist.

The rest of the year Holbox stays beautiful but the island is quieter and some hotels and restaurants close. November to April offers the best weather and a glassy sea. Hurricane season runs June to November.

What to know before booking: Holbox is on the north coast, facing the Gulf of Mexico. Sargassum, which arrives from the east, is far less present here than in the Riviera Maya. That is one reason we send travellers here between May and August, when Tulum and Playa are affected.

Getting there: the road and the ferry

↑ Contents

The journey comes in two parts. First the road to the small port of Chiquilá, around two and a half to three hours from Cancún, a little more from Playa del Carmen or Tulum. ADO buses serve Chiquilá directly, and shared shuttles exist too.

Then the ferry. The crossing takes about 25 minutes and costs 330 pesos per adult, 160 pesos for children under eight. Two companies alternate, Holbox Express and 9 Hermanos, at the same fares and the same times. Departures run roughly every thirty minutes, from the first boat at 6am to the last around 9.30pm.

Your car stays in Chiquilá. There is no vehicle ferry for visitors, and the island has no paved roads. Guarded car parks sit a few minutes from the port, charged by the day. On the island you move on foot, by bike or by golf-cart taxi.

Island life: what surprises people

↑ Contents

Three things throw travellers who arrive unwarned. The streets are sand, and after a shower they turn into puddles: forget wheeled suitcases and delicate shoes. Cash machines are rare and often out of order: arrive with pesos in cash, as many places do not take cards. And mosquitoes are very much present at sunrise and sunset, especially in the wet season.

None of that takes anything away from the island’s charm. But they are the three reasons an unprepared traveller spends the first day grumbling instead of enjoying it.

Where to stay

↑ Contents

The offering is essentially small boutique hotels, posadas and a few high-end places right on the water. There is no large all-inclusive resort, and that is precisely what sets it apart from Cancún.

  • The village: walking distance from everything, the restaurants and the ferry. Best value, a little livelier in the evening.
  • The north beach: hotels with their feet in the sand, more expensive, quieter, ten or fifteen minutes’ walk from the centre.
  • Towards Punta Cocos: the quietest and most isolated, the choice if you have come to cut yourself off. Plan on a bike.

Book early for July and August: the island is small, capacity is limited, and the best addresses go months in advance.

Common questions

↑ Contents

Can you do Holbox as a day trip from Cancún?

Technically yes, and we organise it. But between three hours on the road, the ferry and the return, you are left with little time on the island and you miss the sunset, which is its finest hour. If your schedule allows, one night changes everything.

Holbox or Bacalar, if you only do one?

Holbox for the island feel, the sunsets and whale sharks in summer. Bacalar for the lagoon of seven colours and fresh water. We wrote a full comparison: choosing between Holbox and Bacalar.

Are there mosquitoes on Holbox?

Yes, particularly at sunrise and sunset, and more so in the wet season from May to October. Bring effective repellent, long clothing for the evening, and favour a room with a mosquito net or air conditioning.

How many nights should you plan?

Two nights is the minimum to enjoy a sunset, a boat trip and a real beach day. Three or four if you have come to rest, which is the real reason to come to Holbox.

Do cards work on the island?

In hotels and some restaurants, yes. In small places, golf-cart taxis and village shops, no. Bring pesos in cash before you board the ferry.
