Rio Lagartos is a well kept secret in Mexico.
It is a small fishing village located in the northern part of the Yucatan Peninsula, in the state of Yucatan.
The village is the entrance to the natural park and reserve of Rio Lagartos.
Rio Lagartos is a unique place where you can find peace and tranquility.
The main tour allows you to observe many species of birds and crocodiles, as well as different types of wild animals.
You can also do the same tour by boat to Las Coloradas.
Las Coloradas is a small fishing port located in an estuary on the coast not far from Rio Lagartos.
The vegetation of coastal dunes and mangroves form an incredible ecosystem, especially at the meeting of salty marine waters and those of the laminar drainage of the water table.
Its virgin beaches, its fauna and flora, its marine birds such as pelicans and seagulls and its abundant mangroves are its main attractions.
It has one of the most important salt processing plants in the Republic. Las Coloradas is a first-class industrial center with modern services, including an airfield located 183 km east of Progreso.
Rio Lagartos, on the other hand, is a semi-enclosed body of water, connected to the Gulf of Mexico on its western side. It is a mixture of salt water from the ocean and fresh water from the land. It is filled with mangroves and abundant wildlife with birds, reptiles and many fish. The extension of the estuary is about 80 km2 with an area of 12,850 hectares.
Located at a little more than 2 hours drive from the east side and the cities of Cancun, Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen or Tulum, some will surely prefer to visit the natural reserve and biosphere of Sian Ka’an located in the south of Tulum for its proximity. Nevertheless, Rio Lagartos and Las Coloradas have nothing to envy to Sian Ka’an where the experience will be different but just as unique!
Couple it with a visit of Ek Balam archeological site. Book this unique excursion here.
